OG Kush | Get to Know Your Favorite Strain

It’s time to talk about the original gangster that grandfathered so many other strains you know and love. This week we’re diving into the iconic world of OG Kush.

Earthy, pine, skunky, lemony--all of these are used to describe the unique scent of OG Kush. It’s one of those cannabis strains that leaves a lasting impression on people, and for good reason! Some of the most well-known and loved strains (Fire OG, GSC,  Headband, and more) are descended from it.

The aroma of this classic strain is aggressive and the dry mouth may be real, but the euphoric effects keep people coming back for more. That’s why we decided it was high time we honored this powerful strain.

Before we jump in too deep, we want to remind everyone that our terpenes are cannabis free and 100% legal. However, we do work very hard to isolate the specific terpene profiles of popular strains so that both cannabis consumers and non-cannabis consumers can enjoy and benefit from them.

We’ll talk a bit about the actual cannabis strain, but we also want to highlight the skunky, lemony terpene profile that OG Kush possesses. So, without further ado, here are some of the reasons you should consider experimenting with this particular strain.

OG Kush | Get to Know Your Favorite Strain

  1. The terpene profile of OG Kush is primarily made up of d-limonene, beta-caryophyllene, and myrcene.
  2. Due to its unique blend of cannabinoids and terpenes, this strain is notorious for being euphoric and calming while relieving pain and anxiety.
  3. To cultivate OG Kush, it’s environment must be closely monitored to avoid pests, mildew, and other blites.
  4. This classic strain will always remain a staple due to its top-shelf status and high yield.

OG Kush Terpene Profile

When someone says that OG Kush is dank, that’s putting it lightly. Its heavy skunk scent is lifted up by sharp notes of lemon zest, creating an in-your-face gasoline experience.  This strain owes it’s powerful aromatics to a unique blend of botanicals and terpenes.

OG Kush Terpene Profile

While the terpene profile of any plant can vary due to a variety of factors (weather, farming techniques, soil quality, etc.), the majority of OG Kush strains are dominant in D-Limonene, Beta-Caryophyllene, and Myrcene.

D-Limonene is responsible for the sharp citrus aroma that cuts through the heavier, earthy notes. On its own, this terpene has a loud citrus flavor and can be found in oranges, lemons, limes, and other citrus fruits. It’s also an anti-inflammatory, an antioxidant, and may help reduce stress and anxiety.

The terpene beta-caryophyllene is where OG Kush gets its spicier, earthy aroma from. This isn’t surprising considering that you can find beta-caryophyllene in black pepper, cloves, black caraway, basil, oregano, cinnamon, and more. Like d-limonene, this terpene is an anti-inflammatory, but it’s also antibacterial and has been used for centuries as a powerful analgesic.

Last, but certainly not least, myrcene is one of those terpenes that blends harmoniously with other terpenes to create unique, memorable scents. Found in hops, lemongrass, eucalyptus, and mango, its flavor is both sweet and minty with leafy, vegetal notes. While it’s also an anti-inflammatory and an analgesic, one of it’s most useful features is its ability to boost the effectiveness of other terpenes and cannabinoids.

Myrcene has a special relationship with the blood-brain barrier. It increases the permeability of that barrier so more terpenes and cannabinoids can get through. So, myrcene is like a friend who’s tight with the club bouncer (thanks, myrcene!).

The OG Kush Effect

All of those beautiful terpenes blend harmoniously together to create a truly unique effect. While the exact genetic lineage of OG Kush is a bit of a mystery, many claim it’s a blend of Chemdawg and Hindu Kush. This would put it nicely in the “hybrid” category, and considering its effects this makes sense.

With its notoriously high THC potency and its aromatic blend of terpenes, the effects of OG Kush are often described as euphoric, with intense cerebral effects and a calming body buzz. Many say that this particular strain helps creativity, conversation, and relaxation. Basically, you’re going to experience an elevated mood, you’ll be chatty, but you’ll also get that stereotypical “couch-lock.”

As more and more states legalize both medical and recreational marijuana, OG Kush is growing in popularity. This is due, in large part, because of its powerful analgesic and anxiolytic potential.

Its hybrid nature makes it a good option for those looking for chronic pain relief without needing a nap at noon. Its robust terpene and cannabinoid profile may help soothe and numb sore areas while reducing inflammation.

While OG Kush does have powerful calming effects, those looking to manage anxiety should consider using small doses. The high THC content is pretty awesome (we won’t lie), but too much can actually increase paranoia and anxiety. So, until you know your limits, it’s best to start low and go slow.

OG Kush Cultivation

Due to its top-shelf status and potential health benefits, any grower would be lucky to cultivate this strain. It’s a high demand classic with dedicated repeat customers, making this a staple strain for anyone wanting to break into the business.

Close monitoring of its environment and climate is a necessity though. OG Kush is susceptible to mildew, mites, bugs, and other blites, making it a particularly tricky strain to cultivate.

With careful monitoring and environmental control, however, you can expect your plants to flower in 8-9 weeks. Because it requires such a strictly controlled climate, it’s recommended to grow these buds indoors. If, however, you’re determined to grow it outdoors, you MUST be located in the right climate. So, unless you’re in Southern California (or in an area with near-identical weather conditions), you should stick to indoor cultivation.

Despite its tricky growth requirements, it remains a staple for growers because of its ROI. A healthy plant can produce between 14 to 18 ounces of cannabis (depending on whether it was grown indoors or outdoors). Its high yield and top-shelf status in most dispensaries make it a very profitable strain.
