ABSTRAX Botanical Terpene Flavors Are Officially TTB Approved

ABSTRAX Botanical Terpene Flavors Are Officially TTB Approved by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau

After Rigorous Certification Process, ABSTRAX’s Natural Terpene Blends Can Now Be Leveraged By US-Based Alcohol Beverage Companies Seeking Functional Flavorings

IRVINE – August 5, 2020 - ABSTRAX, an industry leader in the study and production of cannabis and botanically-derived terpenes, has successfully passed the rigorous approval process set forth by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB). Now, ABSTRAX’s aroma and flavor-rich terpene blends can be used in cutting-edge alcoholic beverage formulations by brands seeking “functional” aromas and flavors for their products to enhance the consumer experience.

“This is an exciting moment for our team,” says T.J. Martin, Director of Research and Development at ABSTRAX. “We worked around the clock to make this happen, as the certification process is quite intensive.”

According to US regulations, the TTB is given the authority to tax alcohol and tobacco containing products. Thus, all alcohol containing beverages must have their formulations approved by the TTB, which means that all ingredients they use must also be approved in order for a beverage to be approved for sale domestically.

“We were thrilled to see our hard work pay off,” says Martin. “Now our cannabis inspired terpenes (all of which are THC, cannabis, and hemp-free) can be added to alcoholic beverages including beers, liquors, sparkling seltzers, mixed drinks, and, and more.”

For ABSTRAX, the TTB approval process worked as follows:

  1. The team was required to submit all formulas to the TTB in order to be granted a submission account.
  2. Once the account was granted, ABSTRAX was then able to submit its individual flavors for approval. The process required that specific rules and regulations surrounding naming conventions, ingredient usage levels, accepted ingredients, ingredient status (synthetic vs natural and what constitutes a natural designation) were carefully followed.

  1. Once each sample was received, it was analyzed by the TTB’s beverage lab team, along with ABSTRAX’s application.
  2. The TTB’s team then requested edits and provided comments on each formulation, and once all edits/comments were addressed, the samples and application were reviewed to determine if they met the TTB’s needs and requests.
  3. When a flavor was approved, a Flavor Ingredient Data sheet was generated (aka FIDS) and was approved for use in alcoholic beverage applications.

ABSTRAX is now one of a few innovative terpene focused flavor houses in the world that offers one-of-a-kind TTB approved terpene flavorings and custom formulations including but not limited to; Gelato, Clementine, King Louie XIII, SFV OG, Gelato, Jack Herer, Master Kush, Mango, Strawberry Fruit, Mimosa, and Pineapple Express.

We are now working with a range of beverage companies including craft breweries and distilleries to develop custom flavor systems and complete beverage formulas using our terpenes as key ingredients to develop very unique and new functional beverage products. Our clients can now leverage our ingredients to create very dynamic beverages with more complex cannabis notes that were previously unachievable.

“We look forward to continuing our terpene research program and exploring the range of many benefits surrounding terpenes and their impact on flavor and aroma formulations. We can now design beer and alcohol beverages using specific dominant terpenes and more complex formulas to achieve positive benefits for the mood and body — to help achieve the ultimate beverage experience,” says Max Koby, CEO and Co-founder at ABSTRAX.
