Bacio Gelato

The GASSIEST strain we’ve ever measured

Bacio isn’t just the gassiest strain we’ve ever measured, it nearly tripled the amount of cannasulfur compounds of the previous champ before it. It actually forced us to recalibrate our equipment because the readings were, literally, off the chart.

The mother of modern EXOTIC cannabis

Bacio Gelato has become a staple for breeding new exotic varieties. In our testing, we’ve found over 100 direct descendants of Bacio Gelato including Area 41, Sherbacio, Gelato Dream, and a whole roster of “candy gas” cultivars. It all seemingly comes back to Bacio.

The Legend of Gelato

In 2014, Mario Guzman found himself in a position to leave an indelible thumbprint on the genetic zeitgeist of cannabis forever. In this year, Guzman first bred the infamously loud Gelato family, introducing 4 now-quintessential examples of potent, pungent, exotic cannabis to the modern world.

By crossing his already notable Sunset Sherbert with Thin Mint Cookies, Mario produced the Gelato family phenotypes Acai Berry Gelato, Gello Gelato, Mochi Gelato, and most famously, Bacio Gelato – also known as Gelato #41 or even just… Gelato.

In one single phenohunt, Mario was able
to accomplish four times over what many breeders are lucky to achieve once in their entire career. He introduced genetics to the cannabis landscape that would dominate the industry for the next decade.

ADVANCEDTERPENEPROFILES

These are the next-generation of terpene profiles.

Bacio Gelato contains cannasulfur compounds (CSCs) to impart that gassy, skunky flavor and aroma that matches exactly with the flower's metabolic fingerprint. It also contains newly discovered cannabis flavorants including senecioates and heterocyclic compounds.

Everything in this terpene profile is found natively in the Bacio Gelato flower. We are not adding anything that the plant isn’t showing us.

The Signature Series Process

This collaboration has been four years in the making. The Signature Series is our guarantee that you’re buying the authentic Bacio Gelato. That it’s been made in full collaboration with the original breeder, Mario Guzman - Mr. Sherbinski himself. That we’ve analyzed it for more aroma compounds than anybody else on the planet can even see, let alone use. That our world class flavor team has formulated, tested, and reblended over 100 times to make something absolutely perfect. Not just good, not just great, but perfect.

Phenohunting
Cultivar Selection

If one Gelato is different from another, who has the authority to definitively say which one is authentic? Well, we believe it’s the person who bred the genetics in the first place. In this case, it’s the legendary Mario Guzman.

We work directly with the original breeder to obtain a freshly harvested cut of their selected flower. They provide us with samples (Mario gave us hundreds) to analyze and decide on the perfect phenotype.

This is a long labor of love, but it’s absolutely worth it. We work hand-in-glove with the breeder to find the perfect cut of their flower, just as they always intended. This is what makes for a true Bacio Gelato.

2

Industry-Defining
Analytics

This is the crucial step that separates Abstrax from every other terpene company. We analyze cannabis for well over 500 compounds, including the newly discovered prenylated cannasulfurs and tropicannasulfur compounds. Other terp companies can see, on average, only 30-40 commonly-found compounds.

Why does that matter? Because you can’t formulate accurate profiles if you’re just guessing at the full ingredients of the original cannabis. We see greater than 10x the amount of compounds and we use that data to craft the most faithful and authentic terpene profiles found anywhere.

3

Terpene Sourcing
& Refinement

We approach our raw material a bit differently. Instead of getting hung up on purity and percentages, we source and refine our isolated terpenes by how they smell and how they taste.

Just because something is over 99% pure it doesn’t mean that it tastes good or that it’s somehow a better product. The end consumer doesn’t care if your Valencene is 95% or 99% pure - they care about how it tastes, how it smells, and how it makes them feel.

After verifying that our raw material is free of any hazards or safety concerns, we refine them with flavor, aroma, and experience in mind.

4

Initial
Formulation

Now we’ve arrived at the fun part.

So far we’ve found an exceptional phenotype of a legendary cultivar, we’ve analyzed it more comprehensively than anyone else, and we’ve refined our terps for maximum flavor and aroma.

Our team of expert flavor chemists gets to work by using our gold-standard analytical data as a recipe to recreate the original terpene profile. Our profiles are formulated from scratch. Every. Single. Time.

5

The Art of
Optimization

Formulation is technical, but optimization is an art. Now that we’ve completed the technical rebuild of the terpene profile, we compare the taste and aroma back to the original Gelato flower from Mario.

Is it an exact match to the recipe? You’d be surprised. Even if we have a blend that matches 99% of the analytical data, it could still feel like something crucial is missing.

Our flavor chemists do a direct 1-to-1 sensory comparison between the original flower and the formulated terpene blend. Then they tweak and optimize the formulation to achieve a faithful technical and artistic match of the original cannabis.

6

Internal
Sensory Panel

Taste is subjective. What tastes great to Mac might not taste great to Dennis. Once our flavor chemists have decided that they’re happy with a formulation, they pass it over to our Internal Sensory Panel where R&D formulations are taste-tested and scored by a team.

This is the step where formulas go to die. Our Sensory Panel is ruthless and will only approve the truly incredible. Seriously, you should see how many formulas we have locked away in our vault.

Our team is extra picky when it comes to the Signature Series. We want to make sure that we work out all of the kinks and oddities before we ever present something to the original breeder. It is not unusual for a Signature Series profile to go through over a hundred revisions.

7

The Drawing
Board

For any formula that was deemed unworthy, our Sensory Panel provides detailed notes and feedback for reformulation. Our flavor chemists will revert back to Step 5 and the process begins all over again.

We continue formulating, optimizing, and testing until we have approval from everyone involved at Abstrax. This rigorous system of checks and balances ensures that only the best products make it through to the finish line and into your hands.

8

The Ultimate
Approval

This is our crucial Signature Series step. Up until this point we have blended, tested, optimized, and blended again. Our team has gone through the art and science of flavor formulation a hundred times or more. We feel confident about what we’ve created and are finally ready to present it to Mario for his feedback and approval.

Our team meets with Mario to share our perfected formulation. This usually involves an afternoon of passing around Bacio Gelato joints and carts. We’re not only testing the flavor, we’re testing the experience. Does this formulation align with the experience of Bacio Gelato?

If Mario has any notes, our team goes back to the lab and the whole process repeats. This rigorous system of quality control took our team over four years to get exactly right. It wasn’t until we discovered, and used, the missing cannabis flavorants highlighted in our Science of Exotic research that we finally got the ultimate approval.

9

Toxicology
Safety Testing

Now that the formula is locked in, we submit the blend for a final QC/QA analysis where it’ll be thoroughly tested for everything from appearance and odor to residual solvents and pesticides. Even though all of the raw materials have been previously vetted and screened for safety, we always check every finished formula to ensure the utmost product safety.

Our team of QC/QA experts are the best-in-class and work every day to ensure the highest levels of product safety while providing guidance to our customers - as well as local, state, and federal governments.

We have conducted the industry’s most extensive, and comprehensive, cannabis ingredient toxicology study. It strives to guarantee the safety of every terpene-based flavor for its intended use - including inhalation. This rigorous program, unlike any other in the industry, significantly reduces the risk associated with product safety and regulatory compliance. You can read about it here.

10

Hybrid
Packaging

We’re not making these products for Mario, we’re making them with Mario. This is a joint collaboration and we want to honor the love that has gone into the creation of these legendary cultivars. Every bottle is blend of our two companies’ identities.

It might seem like just a minor detail, but we’ve put a lot of thought into this. Our terpenes go out in opaque black, white, or aluminum bottles. These prevent UV degradation which ensures that they stay fresh for longer.

Cobalt Blue, Clear, and Emerald Green glass bottles allow for light transmission which can pose a serious problem. Terps are sensitive and they don’t like UV light - so we keep them in the dark! We also top off every bottle with inert argon gas to displace the oxygen and lock in freshness during storage. So you receive only the freshest, made to order terpenes.

The Signature Series

The Signature Series represents
a new age of cannabis.

It all starts with authenticity. If every terpene company is selling the same cultivars and the formulas are wildly different, then which one is the closest to the real authentic cannabis?

In an industry plagued with knockoffs that are renamed for more commercial appeal, it is vital to ensure that we are basing our blends upon an authentic sample from a reliable source.

Bacio Gelato Specifications

  • Storage, Handling, and Usage

Storage: We strongly recommend leaving Signature Series profiles unopened and in a refrigerator at 41°F until ready for use. Do not ever freeze the bottle. After they’re opened you’ll still want to keep them in a dark refrigerator at between 41-50°F to preserve the wonderful sensitive aroma of the terpenes. Storing them improperly will result in aroma degradation. Similar to a jar of flower, the more you open and expose it to air and light, the more likely the terpenes will degrade/lose potency. For absolute best results, use within 3 months of receiving.

Handling: Wear gloves and eye protection when handling. Use in a properly ventilated area and out of the reach of children. Avoid contact with the skin, eyes, wood surfaces, and fabrics.

Usage: It’s always a good idea to shake well before use. These are highly concentrated food grade terpenes and flavors for manufacturer use only. Do not directly ingest, inhale, or touch with bare skin prior to dilution. For dilution and mixing recommendations, click here for our mixing guide.

  • Can I have my own Signature Series profile?

Did you create one of the most iconic cannabis strains in history? Do you want to develop your own Signature Series profile?

We are seeking the best of the best. The cultivars that everyone knows by name. This is an opportunity to define exactly what your strain is through world-leading analytics, and to then capitalize upon it for life.

Click here to contact us and get started. It doesn’t cost a dime.

  • Are Jack Herer and Bacio Gelato the only Advanced Terpene Profiles?

    Big nope.

Both the Signature Series and the Native Series contain cannasulfur compounds (CSCs) to impart that gassy, skunky flavor and aroma that matches exactly with the flower’s metabolite fingerprint.

They’re both powered by the same underlying technology, but the Signature Series is made in full partnership with the original cultivator/breeder/family so that it’s a perfect representation.

It’s important to note that not every Signature Series or Native Series profile will contain CSCs. If the flower sample doesn’t contain CSCs then the resulting Signature/Native Series profile won’t either.

For example, Jack Herer is the quintessential hazy sativa and it has almost no CSCs. Bacio Gelato, on the other hand, is the gassiest strain we’ve ever measured.

We’re all about authenticity so we’re not going to start adding random ingredients just to make it smell skunky.

  • Why do you call this a new age of cannabis?

We set out to accomplish four things with the Signature Series:

    1. 1. Work directly with the best cultivators to create the signature version of their flower’s terpene profile based off of our industry-leading analytics and the cultivar’s (strain’s) unique metabolite fingerprint.
    2. 2. Give cultivators the opportunity to capture lost revenue and grow their brand by licensing their own signature profile to other companies looking to sell their infamous products.
    3. 3. Give consumers the opportunity to experience legendary cannabis strains as they were intended regardless of where they choose to shop.
    4. 4. Give 3rd-party companies the opportunity to sell 100% authentic products through a limited licensing agreement without expensive, complicated, and drawn out legal battles.

It is shockingly common to find knockoff products that have been renamed for more marketability to help with their commercial appeal. There is nobody out there testing these products to see if this Gelato is actually Gelato, for example. You can call your product anything and get away with it.

Brands who own the rights to these names are stuck playing whack-a-mole trying to stop knockoffs. Consumers are buying products thinking they’re paying for one thing while unfortunately getting something else.

We have the capability to do better. The future of commercial cannabis is brands. Brand name strains, cultivators, and companies. It’s inevitable and, what’s more, it’s a good thing. It pushes cultivators to create more unique and excellent products in order to stand out. Consumers can have a wider selection of incredible cannabis. And for those companies who are selling knockoffs, this is an opportunity to give your customers what they want. An opportunity to sell the real thing.

  • Will there be more Signature Series profiles?

    Absolutely.

The work that goes into a Signature Series profile is unheard of in the terpene space. We’re not joking when we say that we’ve invested thousands of hours into getting these products perfect. The Bacio Gelato collaboration with Mario Guzman took over four years to get absolutely right.

We are working directly with the world’s best cultivators who are making the most iconic and in-demand strains today.

  • Why can only Abstrax deliver authenticity?

    Hey, glad you asked.

No other terpene company has our capabilities. Abstrax is the only terpene manufacturer licensed in the United States to study, extract, and formulate our own cannabis terpene profiles. Every other terpene company is relying on third-party labs to perform analytics with questionable and varying degrees of quality.

We are the only terpene company in the world with a GCxGC (pronounced GC cross GC.) This is proprietary technology that allows us to test for well over 400 compounds found in cannabis. Other labs test for, on average, around 30-40 compounds. To put it another way, our analytical capabilities are at least 10x greater. It’s like using an electron microscope versus a magnifying glass. Other terpene companies might as well be formulating in the dark.

Even if other terpene manufacturers work directly with cultivators, they are still throwing darts blindfolded trying to guess the correct ingredients. And no other terpene company is using cannasulfur compounds (the ingredients Abstrax discovered that give cannabis its distinctive aroma) so their resulting formula will smell like just a bottle of terps and nothing like the original flower.

    Only Abstrax can deliver authenticity.
