Which cannabis strains have LOTS of Limonene? Read on for 10 d-Limonene dominant profiles!
Found in a variety of citrus fruits from lemons and limes to grapefruits and oranges, d-Limonene is one of the most common terpene isolates in nature. It’s also very prevalent throughout many cannabis varieties. However, if you’re assuming that super citrusy strains have tons of Limonene, you might want to reconsider that notion.
For example, 19 out of the 31 ice-hash rosin samples we analyzed in our Science of Exotic research had d-Limonene as their dominant terpene, including strains with NO hint of tropical or citrus flavors and aromas. Conversely, some varieties that DID contain citrus aromas were dominant in spicy terpenes like beta-Caryophyllene.
This research helped us understand that cannabis flavorants like tropicannasulfurs (TCSCs) play a more significant role in tropical citrus aromas, but that doesn’t mean d-Limonene doesn’t still play an important role!
First, it’s likely d-Limonene still has some influence on citrus aromas. Additionally, its innate properties are still being studied for use across several product types, and access to cannabis education helps consumers find the products they really want — sometimes that’s a strain dominant in d-Limonene!

Our scientists isolate specific terpenes and aromatic compounds of popular cultivars so both cannabis and non-cannabis consumers can enjoy and benefit from botanically-derived, hemp-derived, and cannabis-derived terpenes.
Bacio Gelato
The impact of the fruity Gelato family was so profound that it inspired Leafly to create their now culturally significant Strain of the Year Award. However, while Bacio Gelato does have some sweet and slightly floral notes, this strain is all about that gas. It’s one of the gassiest strains we’ve ever measured and it forced us to recalibrate our equipment to measure it accurately.
This Signature Series profile was created in partnership with Mario Guzman of Sherbinskis and, as such, it’s the world’s ONLY authentic, official Gelato terpene profile. Have customers who want d-Limonene dominant with big gassy flavors? Look no further.
Animal Mintz
The Animal Mintz aroma starts with a wave of mint that’s powerfully cooling and not at all what you might expect from a Limonene dominant strain. Dessert-like genetics (Animal Cookies x SinMint Cookies) are noticeable in its sweet notes of cookie dough. Then, while it may sound overwhelming, potent notes of gas finish it off.
These aromas may sound overpowering, but Animal Mintz manages to be pungent and refreshing while balancing all of this intensity. Plus, while its aroma is undeniably unique, its cerebral experience creates loyal fans. Think euphoric, giggly, and often lead to a relaxing afternoon on the couch.
Banana Munson
Don’t worry, we still have plenty of d-Limonene dominant strains that satisfy the demand for fruity aromas — and Banana Munson is just the start. As a cross between Banana OG and Munson, this strain is a celebration of skunky and fruity hash.
Munson lends its genetic child an old-school hash that’s pungent, while Banana OG gives it subtle notes of sweet and sour citrus and, obviously, banana! It’s loud, dank, and ideal when you need a relaxing pep in your step.
GMO
Descended from iconic Girl Scout Cookies and Chemdawg, GMO has a notoriously savory and funky aroma you might not assume has any d-Limonene whatsoever. You’d be wrong, though. If anything, GMO is proof that terpenes aren’t the only compounds driving cannabis aroma since it shares the same dominant terpenes as sweet, fruity Grape Pie x Do-Si-Dos.
Our GMO profile is also the first to benefit from our breakthrough Science of Exotic discovery. Flavorants Skatole and Indole multiply its notoriously pungent notes for an indescribably loud, gassy finish.
Lemon Cherry Gelato
High Times named Lemon Cherry Gelato one of their Best Strains of 2022, they included it in their list of Popular Strains to Experience in 2023, and its long list of awards is seriously impressive. It’s also the first strain on our list with the strong notes of sweet, fruity citrus many still associate with Limonene.
As a cross between Sunset Sherbet and Girl Scout Cookies, it’s no wonder Lemon Cherry Gelato is deliciously decadent. Its drool-worthy aroma has swirling notes of bright citrus, sweet berries, and a dank, delicately gassy finish. Plus, if you’re into relaxing effects with a delightful hit of euphoria, this one’s right up your alley.
Motornana
We won’t lie, we’re quite proud of this one. Abstrax Genetics profiles are a collection of strains that built out Science of Exotic research — and Motornana is one of our most unique. Cultivated by crossing Motorbreath and Banana Punch, this strain harmoniously balances extreme aromatics that range from creamy to dank.
A base of woody earth supports layers of fresh green fruit and tropical citrus. It’s those notes of ripe, smooth banana that somehow blend everything together so seamlessly, though. Motornana is pleasantly gassy, comfortably loud, and so wildly enjoyable you’ll probably forget all about its hefty d-Limonene content.
Rainbow Belt
If your customers want a Limonene-fueled fruit-forward candy aroma with giggle-inducing effects, then Rainbow Belt is just the ticket. Archive Seed Bank bred the original Rainbow Belts as a cross of Zkittlez and Moonbow #75. Since Moonbow is also believed to have Zkittlez genetics, it’s no surprise that it resulted in such a high-potency strain that locked in those fruity Zkittlez flavors.
Rainbow Belt takes the dankness of diesel and highlights its unexpected floral side. Notes of lemon and lime bring a sweet and sour quality that creates those popular candy-gas aromas. It’s fruity, exotic, and it’ll send your customers on a dank ride across the sky.
Strawnana
If you’re thinking this aroma will be a simple combination of strawberries and bananas, you’re wrong in the most delicious way. Yes, it’s dominant in d-Limonene, but it’s also very high in trans-beta-ocimene. This terpene isn’t usually found in high levels (other strains with these levels include iconic Jack Herer) and is incredibly sweet by itself.
With that in mind, it makes sense that Strawnana is fruit-forward and sweet! Descended from Banana Kush and Bubble Gum, this strain is intensely exotic, pleasantly loud, and has just the barest hint of that gas from its Kush genetics.
Super Sour Diesel
Fans of Sour Diesel and Super Silver Haze are almost guaranteed to fall in love with Super Sour Diesel. Thanks to underground West Coast cultivators, this strain has all of the in-your-face aroma and uplifting effects of Sour Diesel with heightened citrus and an intensified sensory experience.
Like any diesel strain, you can expect a slight taste of fuel, but accompanying that gas you’ll notice the delicious notes of citrus, wood, and pine. The effects are uplifting, energizing, and joyfully stimulating.
White Runtz
White Runtz isn’t the only member of the Runtz family dominant in d-Limonene, but it has a special aromatic quality that lets those gorgeous citrus notes really shine. It’s the creamiest of the phenotypes, and that’s really saying something considering that Runtz OG is known for its smooth, creamy exhale.
Our Native Series White RNTZ terpene profile captures this cultivar’s sophisticated twist on its family legacy. It’s less sweet than Runtz OG, but additional notes of citrus, cream, and earth give this profile a surprisingly exotic twist.
