This sweet, berry-forward profile is a cornerstone of cannabis culture! Discover the aromatic compounds that give the delicious Blue Dream strain its sweet, exotic flavor.
Few cannabis strains reach the level of fame that Blue Dream has. At this point, the child of sweet, lazy Blueberry and high-energy Haze is practically a household name, and even cannabis novices have heard tell of its delicious berry aroma.
First cultivated in Northern California in the early 2000s, Blue Dream had an immediate impact on the cannabis community. Consumers loved its sweet taste and balanced, dreamy effects. Its popularity quickly spread throughout California as it made its way into Washington, Oregon, Colorado, etc.
While many new strains experience a surge in popularity when they first hit the scene, Blue Dream has managed to maintain its fame with a long list of awards, accolades, and pop culture references. It’s cemented its status as an icon in cannabis culture, and we have no doubt it will continue to bring the cannabis community together for decades to come.

Blue Dream Terpene Profile
Saying that Blue Dream smells like blueberries isn’t wrong, it’s just not the whole story. It’s fruity and sweet without being overpowering. It’s mild but memorable, plus it’s downright dank and delicious. None of that would be possible, however, without its unique combination of aromatic compounds like dominant terpenes β-Myrcene, β-Caryophyllene, and α-Caryophyllene.
Myrcene has a fruity, clover-like aroma and is widely found throughout nature. It can be sourced from many botanicals, including mangoes, lemongrass, hops, basil, and more. It has a distinct aroma that is earthy and woody, with notes of cardamom, fruit, and musk.
The beta-Caryophyllene isolate is responsible for the spicy, peppery taste of black pepper and the woodsy smell of clove oil, copaifera oil, basil, hops, oregano, rosemary, and true cinnamon. While alpha-Caryophyllene has a similar aroma and is found in some of the same sources, the differences between these isolates are important. α-Caryophyllene is found in hops, ginseng, and sage, and its flavor is uniquely earthy with a bitter woody overtone.
In all honesty, we’re never really done analyzing! For example, with our recent cannabis flavorant discoveries, we’ve begun identifying more nuanced compounds like isopropyl butyrate and isobutyl hexanoate. These sweet esters were identified early in our analysis of strains like Papaya, and we’re looking forward to determining whether they play a role in Blue Dreams' iconic sweet berry aroma.
Essentially, we’re always seeking more data to create the most accurate profiles of your favorite cultivars. Speaking of data…
Blue Dream Terplytics
Our proprietary Terplytics system is the next generation of cannabis analytics. It allows us to deliver the most advanced botanical testing for exploratory research, sensory quantification, strain validation, product development, and consumer insights. It’s also how we developed our revolutionary Exotic Factor and Loud Factor.
BLUE DREAM
EXOTIC FACTOR — 82%
LOUD FACTOR — 86%
For consumers with specific preferences, Terplytics can be extremely helpful in finding the right products!
The Exotic Factor measures the intensity of exotic flavors and aromas — sweet, fruity, or creamy notes. We don’t know about you, but that definitely sounds like Blue Dream! Exotic profiles can be found in both sativa and indica cultivars, with many being indica-dominant hybrids. The compounds that contribute to these aromas are typically esters, alcohols, and/or aldehydes.
Other cultivars with high Exotic Factors include Blueberry Muffin, Candyland, FPOG, GDP, Jelly Rancher, Orange Apricot, and more.
The Loud Factor quantifies the pungency or “loudness” of a strain. Unlike Total Aromatics by Weight, the Loud Factor assigns scores to individual compounds based on their pungency.
This is significant because some aromatic compounds, such as Skatole and Indole, are incredibly pungent even when present in small amounts (think parts per billion). That’s why simply comparing the total aromatic compounds of two strains wouldn’t tell you which one is “louder.” So, when we say a cultivar has a high Loud Factor, we have the data to back it up.
It’s also important to understand that our scores are logarithmic. That means there is a significant difference between a profile with a Loud Factor of 96% and one with a Loud Factor of 100%.
When creating this Blue Dream profile, we used an exquisitely pungent sauce sample. Through our investigative research, we’ve found that different cannabis products (resin, rosin, flower, etc.) can have different aroma and flavor properties. To capture the unique aroma of Blue Dream, this sample was ideal for our analysis.
Blue Dream Terpene Profile Effects
While psychoactive cannabinoids like THC are responsible for getting you high, aromatic compounds dictate specific effects. That’s why two cultivars with the same cannabinoid levels can promote very different experiences. One might inspire you to clean your house from top to bottom, and the other could leave you melting into the couch all afternoon.
So, if you enjoy how Blue Dream makes you feel, you can thank the unique combo of cannabinoids and various aromatic compounds like terpenes and flavorants.
After decades of hybridization, terms like indica and sativa don’t really have anything to do with effects, and they mainly refer to plant biology. Blue Dream is technically a sativa-leaning hybrid, and a big part of its fame comes from its beautifully balanced effects.
The combination of mental stimulation and blissful body relaxation makes Blue Dream a versatile strain that can be enjoyed at any time of day. Additionally, the lack of couch-lock allows consumers to relax while still being productive. The mental stimulation has been described as creative and alert, while the relaxation element is tranquil and grounded.
