It’s well-balanced, has a tangie-forward aroma, and it’s…boofy? That’s right! Learn about Leafly’s Strain of the Year 2024, Super Boof!
Each year, Leafly analyzes data on strain traffic, dispensary availability, budtender recommendations, and more to select its coveted Strain of the Year winner. Their 2024 pick? Super Boof!
This accolade honors market impact and innovation, and they explain that the goal is to “Catch a strain on its ramp to exponential growth, and huck it into the stratosphere.”¹ Considering the acclaim previous winners have received, it’s safe to say it damn near guarantees success. You’re probably familiar with previous winners from Gelato and Wedding Cake to Runtz and other household cannabis names.
For Leafly’s Strain of the Year 2024, runner-ups included sweet and kushy Sherbanger, Lemon Cherry Gelato from Backpackboyz, the vibrant Glitter Bomb, and more.² So, what made Super Boof the winner?
Leafly Senior Editor David Downs told Business Wire, “Super Boof is such a cool Cinderella story. Its tangy smell is on-trend for modern orange strains. And its versatile, friendly effects meet the needs of today’s consumers while introducing a delightful twist to the market. It’s such a playful, easygoing, beautiful, tasty strain.”³

Super Boof | Origins and Genetics
Some breeders spend years carefully phenohunting to achieve the precise features they want in a cultivar. Precise aroma, effects, pest resistance, or even color can take multiple generations of breeding before these characteristics are achieved. Rarely does this occur on the first or even second try, but that’s the case with Super Boof!
In 2019, a working dad from San Diego known as ‘Blockhead’ crossed a Black Cherry Punch seed from Inhouse Genetics with a Tropicana Cookies F2 seed from Oni Seed Co. He didn’t have the budget of a professional breeding group, he didn’t have any staff, and he had no professional lab equipment. He simply had a can-do attitude and enough space in his laundry room and backyard to experiment.
He also didn’t necessarily set out to breed the cultivar that would one day become Leafly’s 2024 Strain of the Year. A self-proclaimed “seed junky,” Blockhead planned to save the seeds from this particular cross for a future date. He named the resulting plant Blockberry and shared some of these seeds with another seed fanatic in Michigan known as ‘Mobilejay.’
Mobilejay didn’t have high hopes for these seeds, but he still germinated all of them. He jokingly said they would be “boof,” which is slang for middle to low-quality cannabis. After seeing how well his harvest performed, however, he developed an appreciation for it and began ironically calling it “Super Boof.” While Blockhead isn’t the biggest fan of the name, fans of the strain immediately took a liking to it, and the name stuck.
Throughout 2021 and 2022, Super Boof spread via cuttings and clones, and its presence at dispensaries has nearly doubled within the last year. Super Boof has also garnered quite a number of High Times Cup awards, and it earned more national votes than any other new cultivar in the Leafly Budtenders’ Choice Survey this past October.
Super Boof | Trolls and the Importance of Craft Cannabis
There are, perhaps, more professional ways to say this. However, to put it plainly, the Super Boof story is a lesson in not giving a fuck. Let us explain.
Similar to any other industry, there are those with opinions about which cultivars are good or bad, which genetics are most valuable, what aromas are in demand, etc. Everyone is entitled to opinions, but some haters want to light a match and watch the world burn. This is worth mentioning because when snobby hipsters and trolls take to the internet with their big feelings, it can influence the industry.
For example, one of the reasons Mobilejay initially wasn’t impressed with Blockhead’s seeds was their Tangie genetics. While we beg to differ, some feel that Tangie is played out. Even after Super Boof won multiple awards and developed a robust fan base, there were trolls on Instagram who dissed its Tangie genetics this past December.
All of this online negativity, however, has simply created additional traffic and increased interest in Super Boof. Blockhead told Leafly that he didn’t care about the haters and that he was just excited people knew what it was. Mobilejay said, “It’s a new and improved version of Tangie for sure. People claim to hate on it. But I’ve been laughing for years now.”⁴
In any thriving industry, hype culture and haters are par for the course. However, there’s something to be said for craft producers whose creations aren’t dictated by what’s in demand. Whether craft cannabis or craft beer brewing (another hobby of Blockhead’s), unexpected brilliance can come from art made simply for art's sake.
Blockhead put it best when he told Leafly, “… embrace what you like. Lean into your cringe. Beauty is in the eye of the boof holder.”
Super Boof | Terpene Profile and Effects
With its powerhouse genetics, it’s no wonder that Super Boof packs such a phenomenal aroma and flavor with goofy, invigorating effects.
First, let’s talk about that lineage. Tropicanna Cookies (Tangie x Girl Scout Cookies) is a sativa-dominant hybrid with an unforgettable floral citrus aroma. On the other hand, indica-dominant Black Cherry Punch (Purple Punch x Black Cherry Pie) serves up dessert-forward notes of floral cherries. The former is stimulating and creative, and the latter is relaxing.
With that in mind, it’s no surprise that Super Boof is dripping with deliciousness. While the name might make you think of less-than-desirable aromas, Super Boof is all things fruity with just the right amount of gas. Think tropical citrus with a mild sour twist, sweet berries, and a grounding diesel aroma that’s both dank and floral.
None of this would be possible, however, without a unique combination of aromatic compounds. For example, the dominant terpenes in our Super Boof terpene profile include β-Caryophyllene, d-Limonene, and β-Myrcene.
-
β-Caryophyllene is responsible for the spicy, peppery taste of black pepper and the woodsy smell of clove oil, copaifera oil, basil, hops, oregano, rosemary, and true cinnamon.
-
While d-Limonene isn’t necessarily the citrus flavor maker we once thought it was (You can thank Tropicannasulfurs for that!), it still plays an important role in Super Boof’s citrus aroma.
-
Finally, β-Myrcene can be sourced from many botanicals, including mangoes, lemongrass, hops, basil, and more. It smells earthy and woody with distinct notes of cardamom, fruit, and musk.
Not only does Super Boof have all the best flavors and aromas of its genetic parents, but it transforms their exquisite experiences into balanced effects that are just plain fun.
Words like euphoria, creativity, and relaxation come to mind. At the same time, others rave about how it’s an ideal wake’n bake strain, citing its initial stimulating buzz that slowly mellows throughout the day. We recommend getting your hands on Super Boof and forming your own opinion, but we have no doubt that you’ll fall in love with its alluring flavor and aroma.
Super Boof | Terplytics
Our proprietary Terplytics system is the next generation of cannabis analytics. It allows us to deliver the most advanced botanical testing for exploratory research, sensory quantification, strain validation, product development, and consumer insights. It’s also how we developed our revolutionary Gas Factor and Loud Factor.
SUPER BOOF PROFILE
GAS FACTOR — 86%
LOUD FACTOR — 87%
The Loud Factor quantifies the pungency or “loudness” of a strain. Unlike Total Aromatics by Weight, the Loud Factor assigns scores to individual compounds based on their pungency. This is significant because some aromatic compounds are incredibly potent, even in small amounts (more on that later).
The Gas Factor measures the intensity of a profile’s gassy aroma. So, the higher the Gas Factor, the gassier the profile. Simple, right? While that is accurate, it’s not the whole picture.
First, our factor scores are logarithmic. That means there’s a HUGE difference between a profile with a Gas Factor of 96% and one with 100%, whereas the difference between 70% and 90% isn’t as big. Second, while gassy cultivars often have high amounts of specific terpene isolates, they also include cannabis flavorants like cannasulfur compounds (CSCs) that significantly influence aroma even when found in minuscule quantities (we’re talking parts per billion or even parts per trillion).
It’s important to note that our Terplytics numbers have nothing to do with quality. For example, a cultivar with a 100% Loud Factor isn’t objectively better than one with a 0% Loud Factor. It just means that one is much louder than the other.
So, why do Terplytics matter? For consumers with specific preferences, Terplytics can be immensely helpful for finding the right products!
Our scientists isolate specific terpenes and aromatic compounds of popular cultivars so both cannabis and non-cannabis consumers can enjoy and benefit from botanically-derived, hemp-derived, and cannabis-derived terpenes. |
Native Series | True-to-Type Super Boof Terpene Profile
Our Native Series is a collection of Advanced Terpene Profiles that taste and smell exactly like the original cannabis material. The best part? Since they’re botanically sourced, they’re not limited by supply, and they’re actually affordable.

Love Super Boof? Check out THESE Profiles!
Don’t let the name fool you. Leafly’s 2024 Strain of the Year may sound goofy, but Super Boof has won hearts, minds, and multiple awards with notes of fruit-forward cherry, subtle berries, and dank Tangie gas. Embrace the boof!
Out of the tens of thousands of cultivars we’ve analyzed, Bacio Gelato reigns supreme as the gassiest strain ever measured. Created in partnership with Mario Guzman of Sherbinskis, this is the world’s only authentic and official Gelato terpene profile.
Wedding Cake is peppery. I might even call it spicy. You know what? I'd call it MOSTLY spicy. There's some woodiness in there too, but you're pretty much going to get pure spice thanks to the high beta-Caryophyllene. Achoo.
As the drool-worthy descendant of beloved cultivars Sunset Sherbet and Girl Scout Cookies, Lemon Cherry Gelato is deliciously decadent. Citrus and sweet berries swirl together for an aroma that’s fruity, dank, and indulgent.
This blend is all about maximizing one particular taste. We begin with Clementine’s ripe, sweetly citric vibe - crossbred into the buttery smoothness of Girl Scout Cookies. The result is a uniquely floral, citrus experience.
Sour Tangie is one of our most exotic profiles. It has everything you love about Sour Diesel and Tangie in one sexy citrus-powered blend. Imagine the sweet and sour qualities of citrus softened ever so gently by earthy diesel.
The diabolical descendant of OG Kush and Durban Poison, Girl Scout Cookies isn’t as innocent as its namesake. The aroma is dessert-like with floral notes, sweet citrus, and a touch of earthy goodness… but don’t be fooled. These terps mean business.
Purple is a pure gravy train. It’s more like cruising down a lazy river made of sweet, fruity goodness. Purple Punch crosses heavy berry flavor into an uppercut of exotic tropical/apple before finishing with an earthy haymaker.
A prominent terpene produced in trichomes, beta-Caryophyllene is also found in large quantities in traditional medicinal plants like black pepper, black caraway, cloves, basil, oregano, cinnamon, and many others. This is a uniquely spicy terpene. beta-Caryophyllene is a core ingredient of many contemporary spices, fragrances, soaps, and lotions.
As its name suggests, d-Limonene has a loud citrus flavor and smell. It is found in oranges, limes, lemons, grapefruits, and many other citrus fruits.
beta-Myrcene is a prevalent terpene in hops, mango, bay leaves, lemongrass, and eucalyptus. The flavor is a strong sweetness with minty balsam and a vegetal leafy feel.
