This heavy-hitting strain sounds like a delightfully fruity baked good, and truth be told… it will get you seriously baked. We’re talking about the Apple Fritter strain!
Lumpy’s Flowers¹ cultivated this cannabis delicacy by crossing Sour Apple (Sour Diesel x Cinderella 99) and Animal Cookies (GSC x Fire OG). The resulting cultivar was understandably exotic with a scrumptious aroma and balanced effects that can be enjoyed equally day or night. Just make sure your daytime use coincides with a flexible schedule to accommodate Apple Fritter’s exquisite euphoria.
It made the High Times “World’s Strongest Strains” list in 2016,² then it won 2nd place for Hybrids at the High Times Northern California Cup that same year, finally winning Best Hybrid at the High Times Cannabis Cup in both 2017 and 2018.
People love this potent, top-shelf strain so much that it usually sells out FAST. So, if you want to infuse products with a strain customers clearly love, consider Apple Fritter!
Read on and learn about the compounds behind Apple Fritter’s one-of-a-kind aroma and fast-acting effects.
Not all cannabis strains smell or taste like their namesake, but we’re thrilled to say Apple Fritter delivers. The unique combination of aromas in its genetics have given it an overwhelmingly sweet and slightly sour apple flavor. While Apple Fritter IS fruity, there’s a subtle earthy quality that’s a little bit spicy and a little bit pastry-like. The cakey, vanilla exhale is the finishing touch on a truly one-of-a-kind strain.
None of that would be possible, however, without the unique combination of aromatic compounds like dominant terpenes β-Caryophyllene, β-Myrcene, and d-Limonene.
The beta-Caryophyllene isolate is responsible for the spicy, peppery aromas found in black pepper and the woodsy smell of clove oil, basil, hops, oregano, rosemary, and true cinnamon.
By itself, beta-Myrcene has an aroma that’s earthy and woody with notes of cardamom, fruit, and musk. It’s also one of the most prevalent terpenes in nature and can be sourced from mangoes, lemongrass, hops, basil, and SO much more.
While cannabis flavorants like Tropicannasulfurs play a significant role in tropical citrus aromas, that doesn’t mean d-Limonene doesn’t still play an important role in the sweet, fruity notes of Apple Fritters. This terpene is often found in fruits like lemons, limes, grapefruits, oranges, etc.
If we’re being honest, we’re not done analyzing! We’ve begun identifying more nuanced compounds like isopropyl butyrate and isobutyl hexanoate. These sweet esters were identified early in our analysis of fruity strains like Papaya, and we’re curious if they play a role in Apple Fritters' iconic sweet, apple aroma.
At the end of the day, we’re always collecting data to create the most accurate profiles of your favorite cultivars. Speaking of data...
Our proprietary Terplytics system is the next generation of cannabis analytics. It allows us to deliver the most advanced botanical testing for exploratory research, sensory quantification, strain validation, product development, and consumer insights. It’s also how we developed the Exotic Factor and the Loud Factor.
TERPLYTICS
EXOTIC FACTOR: 92%
LOUD FACTOR: 81%
The Exotic Factor measures the intensity of exotic flavors and aromas — sweet, fruity, or creamy notes. Kinda sounds like Apple Fritter, right? With a whopping 92% Exotic Factor, that makes sense!
Exotic profiles can be found in both sativa and indica cultivars, and the compounds that contribute to these aromas are typically esters, alcohols, and/or aldehydes. Other cultivars with high Exotic Factors include Blue Dream, FPOG, GDP, Candyland, Orange Apricot, and more.
The Loud Factor quantifies the pungency or “loudness” of a strain. Unlike Total Aromatics by Weight, the Loud Factor assigns scores to individual compounds based on their pungency. This is important because some aromatic compounds, like flavorants Indole and Skatole, are incredibly pungent even when present in parts per billion.
That’s why comparing the total aromatic compounds of two strains wouldn’t tell you which one is “louder.” So, when we say a cultivar has a high Loud Factor, we have the receipts to back it up (and by receipts, we mean lots and lots of data).
To create our Apple Fritters terpene profile, we analyzed a High Terpene Extract (HTE). During post-processing of fresh frozen flower extract, liquid is separated from crystallized THCA. That liquid contains a very high concentration of terpenes, which is why it’s called HTE (duh).
We then analyzed this sample using our Advanced Aroma Mapping 3D Metabolite Fingerprint™ technology, amplified the sweet notes customers love so much, and now you have access to a terpene profile that’s PERFECT for seasonal fall products.
Psychoactive cannabinoids like THC are what get you high, and Apple Fritter does boast impressive THC levels ranging from 22-28%. However, it’s the aromatic compounds that promote specific effects. That explains why cultivars with the EXACT same cannabinoid levels can promote wildly different experiences.
Psst! That’s also why THC levels are NOT an indicator of quality.
One cultivar may inspire a high-energy backyard barbecue, another might have you blissfully disassociate while staring at your favorite spot on the ceiling for hours. So, if you like how Apple Fritter makes you feel, thank the combination of cannabinoids AND aromatic compounds.
While terms like indica and sativa don’t actually have anything to do with effects (they refer to plant biology), Apple Fritter is considered an indica-dominant hybrid. The effects reportedly kick in almost immediately with a cerebral rush that eradicates any notion of negative thinking. Over time, a tingly sensation settles into your body, resulting in a euphoric sense of peace, relaxation, and euphoria.
The Apple Fritters Terpene Profile can benefit both product manufacturers and dispensaries.
For dispensaries, budtenders can recommend Apple Fritter to customers that already like Sour Apple or Animal Cookies since there are noticeable genetic similarities. At the same time, consumers who love dessert-forward cultivars like GSC, Cherry Pie, or Lemon Cherry Gelato may also be drawn to Apple Fritters.
Additionally, not only does Apple Fritters appeal to consumers who like sweet, fruity cultivars, it also attracts canna-connoisseurs who are on the hunt for exotic strains. Plus, with the holidays JUST around the corner, brands can put a seasonal spin on products with the sweet, autumnal flavor and aroma of Apple Fritters.
Infusing gummies, vapes, infused pre-rolls, or even beverages with the terpene profile of this cultivar immediately gives them a playfully tempting angle that makes you want to try them simply for the novelty.
Just like an actual apple fritter, though, you’ll find yourself coming back for another… and the same can probably be said for your customers.
