Cannabis Flavorants: Game Changer for Manufacturers, Consumers, and MORE
We don’t feel like we’re overstating it when we say the discovery of cannabis flavorants is going to revolutionize the science of cannabis aroma.
During our Science of Exotic Cannabis research, we discovered that terpenes may have been overemphasized when it comes to the aroma of exotic cultivars. Instead, things like esters, volatile sulfur compounds, alcohols, etc., were concluded to be responsible for many of the unique and diverse flavors within cannabis. We’re referring to this class of compounds as “cannabis flavorants.”
This includes the fecal-smelling (no joke) Skatole, chameleon-like Indole, a variety of Tropicannasulfur compounds (TCSCs), and MORE. Even when these flavorants were present in parts per trillion, their impact on aroma was significant. The implications of this data are particularly important for cannabis consumers, manufacturers, marketers, and regulators.
Flavorant insights give manufacturers access to more comprehensive data about their products. This allows them to provide more accurate product information, making it easier for consumers to find their desired products. Currently, COAs only contain cannabinoids and limited terpene information, which we now know can be misleading. With a greater chemical understanding of cannabis aroma, testing accuracy will improve, and cannabis labeling can resolve misconceptions.
Manufacturers who understand this information can have greater control over product development and the overall consumer experience.
Chemohunting: Phenohunting of the Future
While modern cannabis owes much of its exquisite diversity to the unmatched artistry of cultivators and their phenohunting efforts, this practice isn’t without its issues. It relies solely on the views of the individual evaluating each cut, so it’s subjective to their senses and preferences.
Additionally, propagating hundreds of phenotypes can be time-consuming, expensive, and their efforts don’t incorporate the chemical complexities in a plant’s aroma and genetics. If breeders had access to a plant’s secondary metabolite profile, however, many of these issues would disappear.
The only way to assess a plant’s secondary metabolite profile is through analytical testing for quantification — enter Chemohunting.
Chemohunting takes all of the best practices of phenohunting and incorporates cutting-edge chemical analysis. This type of in-depth data gives breeders valuable information they can use to make more informed decisions. We can provide breeders with a “receipt” of every compound in their flower. With these compounds quantified, breeders can now selectively breed for different attributes with laser precision and rapid speed.
For example, if cultivators want to increase garlic or cheese aromas, they need to breed for fewer TCSCs since they overpower non-sulfurous compounds. Knowing that high indole means low TCSCs, and vice versa, allows cultivators to breed for specific traits more accurately and efficiently. Chemohunting simply provides a level of insight that phenohunting isn’t capable of.
Not only can chemohunting serve as an important aspect of quality control in addition to breeding efforts, but it can help the industry create a shared language for more accurate naming conventions. While strain names are fun and have a deeply rooted history in cannabis culture, the consumer deserves an opportunity to shop for what they want in simple terms driven by data.
THC Gummy Flavor Breakthrough: Delicious Cannabis Gummies EVERY Time!
When it comes to edibles, flavor almost always trumps other features. Even if a product meets their preferences, consumers will abandon it if it doesn’t taste good. It’s that simple. Between the complexities of cannabis flavor and a complete lack of dedicated flavor solutions, it can take a LOT of trial and error to make cannabis gummies taste good.
Fortunately, Gellies are the flavor solution weed gummies have been waiting for.
The Abstrax Gellies Collection harmonizes with cannabis flavors instead of masking them. Using our Cloudburst Series flavor technology, we’ve designed Gellies so manufacturers can intentionally infuse gummies with maximum flavor. We use exotic flavor compounds natively found in cannabis to complement that natural dankness instead of clashing with it.
When manufacturers use flavor ingredients that were never intended for use in specific product types, it can cause problems. Not only can it lead to undesirable flavors, but it can also lead to hardware issues and potential health risks for consumers. Manufacturers can rest assured that Gellies are explicitly designed for gummies.
Plus, you can incorporate Gellies into gummy formulations regardless of whether or not they’re psychoactive, and these flavors pair perfectly with everything from CannaClear and live resin to distillate or even decarbed flower.
CannaClear Licensing: The Cannabis Concentrate Revolution
Many consumers make purchasing decisions based on THC levels and price. They want the highest possible THC percentage at the lowest possible price. However, some high-THC carts habitually turned an undesirable shade of red instead of the pristine clarity consumers associate with high-potency products. Now, that’s no longer an issue.
CannaClear is a term for “oxidation remediation.” Basically, we can prevent high-THC carts from turning red, and we can even restore products that have already been discolored. Manufacturers can now license this technology to help create products that look high-end with none of the undesirable discoloration.
Even MORE Insights and Tech Advancements for Canna-Products in 2025!
This is just the beginning! We’ve got even more insights and technological advancements to share in 2025. While we’re keeping a lot of it under wraps (for now), here’s a quick glimpse into what you can expect heading into the new year.
First, our Terplandia Hemp-Derived Terpene Profiles are getting an upgrade! Hemp-derived terpenes (HDTs) are precisely what they sound like. They’re terpenes that have been extracted from hemp. And in 2025, we will have the industry’s ONLY organic certified hemp terpenes!
They’ll still be distilled from FRESH (never frozen) live flower within thirty minutes of harvest, and they’ll be refined using molecular distillation for the highest quality possible. In 2025, though, we’ll only receive organic HDTs, and we’ll only carry non-organic profiles until we run out.
So, if your customers love the profiles we have right now, act fast and grab em’ before they’re gone! However, rest assured that the organic HDTs on the way will still have all the dank, earthy goodness everyone loves.
On top of that, we’ve got a NEW Signature Series Profile on the way! These profiles are the world’s only licensed and official terpene profiles of legendary cannabis, and they take YEARS to perfect. Basically, “good enough” is never good enough. If a profile isn’t perfect, you’ll never see it. It took five years, the development of one-of-a-kind instrumentation, and the discovery of new aromatic compounds to create our latest Signature Series profile, Bacio Gelato.
The Signature Series Process is propelling the cannabis industry into a new age of authenticity, and we’re bringing the industry another cultivar-approved profile in 2025. We can’t spill the details yet, but trust us when we say it will be BIG. If that wasn’t enough, we’ve got TWO new collections and all kinds of “cheesy” goodness to share!
This past year has been one for the books, but we have much to look forward to in 2025. Cheers to the New Year!
