The Super Boof strain has one of the most commercially validated Tangie Gas profiles available, and its origin and subsequent success tells a very specific story. Leafly named it their 2024 Strain of the Year after it became the fastest-growing new cultivar on their platform,¹ and by 2025 it was Colorado's best-selling strain for the full year according to Leafly sales data.²
What makes that journey so compelling is where Super Boof started. It was bred in a San Diego laundry room in 2019 with no institutional budget, no formal launch, and it still outperformed every professionally funded cultivar in consumer and budtender validation. For product developers, that kind of organic market success is worth building around.
Learn about the compounds driving Super Boof’s aroma profile, its unique Terplytics data, and discover product positioning and formulation opportunities unique to this popular strain.

Super Boof is a cross of Black Cherry Punch and Tropicana Cookies, and it was bred in 2019 by a San Diego cultivator known as Blockhead. As the story goes, Blockhead was working from his laundry room and backyard with a single pack of seeds from each parent. Originally, he called it Blockberry. From there, Michigan grower and influencer Mobilejay selected a standout phenotype which he ironically named Super Boof.
While he was jokingly using the slang for low-quality flower, he began distributing it via cuttings and clones in 2021. Despite Blockhead's reservations, the name stuck. What’s more, the strain's rapid organic spread proved more durable than any conventional launch strategy could have ever manufactured.
Tropicana Cookies traces its lineage directly back to Tangie, which Abstrax's Science of Exotic Cannabis research identified as containing a significant amount of tropicannasulfur compounds (TCSCs).³ TCSCs are the class of flavorants responsible for the pungent, electric citrus notes that define the Tangie Gas category. Black Cherry Punch contributes the dark fruit dimension and structural density that grounds the profile and prevents it from reading as purely citrus-forward.
The resulting strain from that Tropicana Cookies and Black Cherry Punch cross was a Tangie Gas profile with unusual depth. It’s citrus-dominant on the top end, has dark cherry complexity in the middle, and a gassy backbone that carries through on the finish.
Dominant terpene d-Limonene, which you can find in various citrus fruits and across many cannabis cultivars, contributes a structural citrus character that helps define the top notes. However, as our research has established, this terpene alone doesn’t account for the intensity of tropical citrus in profiles like Super Boof.
In Tangie-lineage cultivars, TCSCs carry significantly higher odor priority than d-Limonene and are the primary drivers of the pungent, tropical citrus character that distinguishes Tangie Gas from other citrus-forward profiles. The Tropicana Cookies lineage in Super Boof places it directly within the TCSC-rich genetic territory that Abstrax's research has mapped across Tangie and its descendants.
The sesquiterpene beta-Caryophyllene contributes base notes of spice, woody earthiness, and much of the structural weight that gives Super Boof its persistence on the palate.
The monoterpene beta-Myrcene helps create the structure of the middle notes by adding an earthy body and a soft, musky undercurrent that rounds out the profile. It is also commonly present alongside prenylated cannasulfur compounds (PCSCs) in gas-forward cultivars.
Our analysis of Super Boof was performed on cannabis flower using two-dimensional gas chromatography (GCxGC-TOF-MS/FID/SCD), the same advanced methodology used across the Science of Exotic Cannabis research series.
Our proprietary Terplytics system is the next generation of cannabis analytics. It allows us to deliver the most advanced botanical testing for exploratory research, sensory quantification, strain validation, product development, and consumer insights. It’s also how we developed the Gas Factor and the Loud Factor.
TERPLYTICS
LOUD FACTOR: 87%
GAS FACTOR: 85
Unlike Total Aromatics by Weight, the Loud Factor assigns scores to individual compounds based on their pungency. This is important because some compounds, like flavorants Indole and Skatole, are incredibly pungent even when present in parts per billion or trillion.
A score of 87 reflects a profile that commands attention from the jar to the last puff. For product developers, this means Super Boof performs strongly in formats where aroma intensity is a primary purchase driver. That includes premium infused pre-rolls, live resin-style vapes, and concentrate formats where the full aromatic character is expected.
The Gas Factor measures the intensity of a profile’s gassy aroma. Our scores are logarithmic, so there’s a HUGE difference between a Gas Factor of 96 and 100. Plus, similar to the Loud Factor, it involves more than counting aromatics by weight since flavorants can significantly influence aroma even at trace concentrations.
With a Gas Factor of 85, Super Boof delivers meaningful, assertive gas character that positions it well for consumers who shop specifically for pungent, fuel-forward citrus profiles.
Super Boof carries unusually strong consumer validation for a strain of its age. Nearly 6,000 Leafly reviewers had favorited it as of 2024, with an average rating of 4.6 out of 5 across a broad and geographically diverse audience. So, what do they like about the Super Boof experience?
Consumers widely associate this profile with clear-headed, uplifting ease. Think giggly and social, which makes it a popular choice for daytime and early evening occasions. The citrus-forward character may contribute to the energetic, mood-brightening impression consumers commonly report, though individual experiences vary and are shaped by factors beyond aroma alone.
For product developers, the occasion positioning is important. Heavier, more sedative profiles that dominate many dispensary menus don't appeal to consumers who want uplifting, fruit-forward experiences. Super Boof, however, can appeal to diverse consumer groups. It’s intense enough to satisfy pungency-seeking shoppers, and daytime-friendly enough to convert those who might otherwise skip the gas shelf entirely.
Super Boof's market trajectory is among the more credible in recent cannabis data because no marketing budget built it. It earned more national budtender votes than any new cultivar except Permanent Marker in the 2024 Leafly Budtenders' Choice Survey, and that was before they named it their fastest-growing new cultivar of the year.
Importantly, its popularity hasn’t declined. According to Leafly's Best-Selling Strain data of 2025, Super Boof was Colorado's top-selling strain for the full year. They described Super Boof's Colorado dominance as "a counterpoint to dominant trends," citing how its sharp citrus character stands apart from the sweet dessert profiles that have dominated dispensary menus. This indicates that there’s demand for a different Gas category on the shelf.
The Gas Categories that define the current exotic cannabis market (OG Gas, Chem Gas, Candy Gas, and Tangie Gas) attract distinct consumer segments. As the market has matured and as buyers have developed the vocabulary to distinguish between categories, Tangie Gas strains have developed strong consumer recognition. Super Boof's lineage places it squarely in this category, and its commercial performance in markets where consumers shop by flavor category confirms the demand is real and growing.
For dispensaries, budtender alignment matters here. Super Boof was the most recommended new strain nationally in the Leafly Budtenders' Choice Survey. That means people closest to the consumer have validated this profile as one they can sell confidently. That reduces friction at point of sale and supports the kind of repeat purchase behavior that sustains shelf placement in competitive markets.
The Super Boof terpene profile offers something valuable that formulators don’t always have access to: organic consumer validation across multiple market types, and a compound architecture that performs at high intensity across formats.
Vapes are a particularly strong fit for Super Boof terpenes. The citrus top notes volatilize cleanly and deliver immediate sensory impact, while the Loud Factor ensures the gassy character registers through the full consumption experience. Both live resin-style and distillate-based formulations benefit from the profile's balance of citrus complexity and gas intensity, though distillate formulations in particular gain the most from added terpenes given the aromatic loss that occurs during processing.
Infused pre-rolls benefit from the name recognition at point of sale. Super Boof carries enough cultural credibility that it reduces the budtender education burden considerably. Essentially, it sells itself. Consumers who know Super Boof ask for it by name, and those who don’t are easy to convert once a budtender mentions Leafly's 2024 Strain of the Year.
Concentrates are a natural category given back-to-back Ego Clash wins in 2023 and 2024 using Super Boof source material. With those awards, hash producers and solventless brands have validated this profile at a particularly high competitive level.
Gummies and edibles are a less obvious fit given the profile's intensity, but the citrus and dark cherry character integrates well with fruit-flavored base formulations at calibrated concentrations. Super Boof’s gas is still present in edible formats, which can serve as a point of differentiation for brands positioning in the premium, cannabis-forward edible segment.
Seasonal products can lean into Super Boof's citrus brightness in the warmer months, while the gassy depth and dark cherry character make it particularly well-suited for fall and winter launches where consumers gravitate toward more complex, assertive profiles.
Super Boof has its own intensity, but blending Super Boof terpenes with isolates, blends, or other profiles creates targeted formulation opportunities for brands that want to own a specific position within the Tangie Gas space or transition their lineup in a new direction.
Adding an isolate like d-Limonene gives Super Boof a brighter top note that emphasizes the tropical citrus character. This direction works particularly well in vape cartridges and sparkling beverage formats where top-note impact determines first impression.
For an entirely different direction, formulators can deepen the dark fruit dimension with berry-forward blends. Pairing with Black Cherry Noir or Huckleberry Buzzsaw gives the aroma a richer, more fruit-forward expression without sacrificing gas intensity. This direction suits gummy and edible formats where the dark cherry character naturally integrates well.
For brands whose product lineup lives primarily in OG Gas or Chem Gas profiles, Super Boof offers an entry point into citrus-forward gas without abandoning pungency. Blending Super Boof with a Chem Gas profile like savory GMO will preserve the pungent gas intensity existing customers expect while introducing an electric citrus that attracts different consumers. This approach lets brands test Tangie Gas positioning without repositioning their entire lineup.
Blending with something like Jack Herer, on the other hand, introduces a Terpinolene-driven pine and herbal dimension that softens Super Boof's citrus intensity without dulling its gas character. This combo occupies an interesting middle position that’s gassy and fruit-forward for Tangie Gas consumers while still classic and approachable for consumers who shop for familiarity. This direction works well for brands looking to extend into the citrus gas space while maintaining the value from well-established cultivar names and aromas.

At Abstrax Tech, our Native Series profiles are developed by analyzing the most aromatically complex cannabis samples using GCxGC-TOF-MS/FID/SCD analysis to capture the trace aroma compounds that standard testing misses entirely. That’s why our profiles taste and smell exactly like the original material. They’re also botanically sourced, not limited by supply, and they’re actually affordable.
For brands building in the Tangie Gas category or looking to add a high-intensity citrus gas option to an existing lineup, Super Boof is one of the most commercially validated entry points available.

Don’t let the name fool you. Leafly’s 2024 Strain of the Year may sound goofy, but Super Boof has won hearts, minds, and multiple awards with notes of fruit-forward cherry, subtle berries, and dank Tangie gas. Embrace the boof!
Out of the tens of thousands of cultivars we’ve analyzed, Bacio Gelato reigns supreme as the gassiest strain ever measured. Created in partnership with Mario Guzman of Sherbinskis, this is the world’s only authentic and official Gelato terpene profile.
Wedding Cake is peppery. I might even call it spicy. You know what? I'd call it MOSTLY spicy. There's some woodiness in there too, but you're pretty much going to get pure spice thanks to the high beta-Caryophyllene. Achoo.
As the drool-worthy descendant of beloved cultivars Sunset Sherbet and Girl Scout Cookies, Lemon Cherry Gelato is deliciously decadent. Citrus and sweet berries swirl together for an aroma that’s fruity, dank, and indulgent.
This blend is all about maximizing one particular taste. We begin with Clementine’s ripe, sweetly citric vibe - crossbred into the buttery smoothness of Girl Scout Cookies. The result is a uniquely floral, citrus experience.
Sour Tangie is one of our most exotic profiles. It has everything you love about Sour Diesel and Tangie in one sexy citrus-powered blend. Imagine the sweet and sour qualities of citrus softened ever so gently by earthy diesel.
The diabolical descendant of OG Kush and Durban Poison, Girl Scout Cookies isn’t as innocent as its namesake. The aroma is dessert-like with floral notes, sweet citrus, and a touch of earthy goodness… but don’t be fooled. These terps mean business.
Purple is a pure gravy train. It’s more like cruising down a lazy river made of sweet, fruity goodness. Purple Punch crosses heavy berry flavor into an uppercut of exotic tropical/apple before finishing with an earthy haymaker.
A prominent terpene produced in trichomes, beta-Caryophyllene is also found in large quantities in traditional medicinal plants like black pepper, black caraway, cloves, basil, oregano, cinnamon, and many others. This is a uniquely spicy terpene. beta-Caryophyllene is a core ingredient of many contemporary spices, fragrances, soaps, and lotions.
As its name suggests, d-Limonene has a loud citrus flavor and smell. It is found in oranges, limes, lemons, grapefruits, and many other citrus fruits.
beta-Myrcene is a prevalent terpene in hops, mango, bay leaves, lemongrass, and eucalyptus. The flavor is a strong sweetness with minty balsam and a vegetal leafy feel.
