What makes a strain “gassy?” Learn how we use Terplytics to quantify Gas and discover the ten gassiest strains we’ve measured (so far).
Are your customers chasing powerful, fuel-forward cannabis aromas? You know, those diesel-like fumes that are often earthy, sometimes spicy, and confusingly alluring? In that case, you’re going to want cannabis terpene profiles with a high Gas Factor.
While some have used the term “gas” to describe top-shelf or high-quality cannabis, it’s also used to describe cannabis aromatics with chemical notes reminiscent of fuel and skunk.
But what makes a cultivar gassy? Is a cultivar simply gassy or not gassy? Are there degrees of gas? What’s the gassiest cultivar? Don’t worry, we’ve got all the answers and the data to back it up.
Discover the ten gassiest strains we’ve identified so far and learn how our proprietary Terplytics system allows us to quantify gas.
What is Terplytics?
Terplytics is the next generation of cannabis analytics. Our proprietary Terplytics system is the backbone of our cutting-edge R&D, extraction, and analytical technologies, and it makes it possible for us to analyze massive amounts of data.
This is important because it means we can deliver the most advanced botanical testing for exploratory research, sensory quantification, strain validation, product development, and consumer insights. It’s also how we developed the Gas Factor.
The Gas Factor measures the intensity of a profile’s gassy aroma. So, the higher the Gas Factor, the gassier the profile. Simple, right? While that is accurate, it’s a gross oversimplification.
First, our factor scores are logarithmic. That means there’s a HUGE difference between a profile with a Gas Factor of 96% and one with 100%, whereas the difference between 70% and 90% isn’t as big.
The Science of Exotic Cannabis Part II: The Curious Case of Chem
Second, this isn’t as simple as counting aromatics by weight. While gassy cultivars often have high amounts of terpene isolates beta-Myrcene, d-Limonene, or beta-Caryophyllene, they also include flavorants that significantly influence aroma even when found in minuscule quantities (we’re talking parts per billion or even parts per trillion).
Flavorants like Skatole, for instance, amplify the chemical and savory undertones of cannabis while intensifying gassy aromatics from prenylated cannasulfur compounds (PCSCs). PCSCs are responsible for the gassy and skunky aromas of some cannabis cultivars, so the synergy of various aromatic compounds plays a big role in overall gas.
The Science of Dank: Discovery of New Cannasulfur Compounds
Lastly, when our research uncovered PCSCs (previously known as cannasulfur compounds or CSCs), we also discovered that gassy aromas are highly dependent on product age. During our observations, PCSCs increased substantially during the final week of flowering and then again at the end of curing. However, the concentration of PCSCs dropped significantly just ten days later. For growers, this means that time is of the essence when producing and packaging products. For consumers hunting for gas, it means that freshness is pivotal.
