Runtz was named Leafly’s Strain of the Year in 2020, and consumers have loved it ever since.¹ As of March 2026, it ranked as the top-selling strain in Delaware, Michigan, and Nevada, according to reporting that draws on data from Headset and state cannabis commissions.² Consumers love Runtz and its many phenotypes, and it’s no mystery why Runtz sells so well.

The Runtz lineage sits squarely in the Candy Gas aroma category with layers of intensely sweet, confection-forward notes over a fuel-forward gas backbone. That combination is one of the most commercially resilient aromas in the market, and it's a thread that runs through nearly every member of the Runtz family from the original OG to newer phenotypes like Sour Runtz.

What Makes Runtz Unique? Genetics, Aroma, and the Candy Gas Connection

Runtz originated when breeder Nick Corwin crossed indoor-grown Zkittlez with Gelato 33. Zkittlez contributed bright, candy-forward fruit aromatics while Gelato added a creamy, dessert-sweet depth and gas backbone. This combination made an immediate impression at the cultivar's 2017 Emerald Cup debut. 

Co-founder Ray Bama explained, "When Runtz first came out... when you opened the bag everyone would say candy. At that point there wasn't really a terp like that besides Zkittlez."⁴ The Runtz crew built a brand around that aroma, and a distribution partnership with Cookies Fam helped carry it to a national audience.⁵

Today, the Runtz family spans a wide range of cultivars. Each has its own distinct aroma character, but the shared genetic foundation that made the original so commercially compelling is still present. That foundation places most Runtz phenotypes within the Candy Gas category. 

A strain falls into this category through flavorant chemistry. Cannabis flavorants drive the aromatic differences between exotic cannabis aromas, and the defining flavorants in Candy Gas profiles include high concentrations of prenylated cannasulfur compounds (PCSCs) alongside sweet, fruit-forward esters.⁶ The result is a profile that’s perceived as both pungent and sweet in equal parts.

While they don’t drive the most distinct aromas, terpenes do contribute to the overall impression and provide the broad aromatic foundation both compound classes sit on. Because dominant terpenes can be similar across many cannabis categories and even across related phenotypes, terpene data alone can’t identify a Candy Gas cultivar and it can’t differentiate between Runtz phenotypes.

Runtz OG Strain: The Cultivar That Started the Lineage

Runtz OG is the original Zkittlez x Gelato 33 cross that launched the entire family,  and its competition record set the bar high for every strain that followed. As one of over 700 total entries across 14 categories at the 2019 Emerald Cup, Runtz OG took 1st Place for Sungrown Flower at one of the most competitive cannabis competitions in the country.⁷ 

The aroma that won over those judges still drives consumer demand today; intensely sweet candy and tropical fruit riding on a smooth, fuel-forward gas backbone.

Pink Runtz Strain: Sweet, Gassy, and Broadly Appealing

The Pink Runtz strain is most commonly described as a Runtz phenotype sharing the same Zkittlez x Gelato 33 foundation as the original, though some sources attribute it to a cross of Pink Panties and Rainbow Sherbet. 

Wherever its lineage lands, the aroma profile is known for being sweeter and more floral than Runtz OG, with the same fuel-forward gas backbone that defines the family and a candy-forward finish that’s driven significant expansion since entering the market shortly after Runtz OG. By May of 2024, Leafly reported a 40% year-over-year increase in Pink Runtz menu presence across the country.⁸

White Runtz Strain: A Cookies Fam Phenotype With Enduring Appeal

White Runtz shares the same Zkittlez x Gelato 33 foundation as the rest of the classic Runtz phenotypes, but it was Cookies Fam's distribution muscle that brought it to national scale. Leafly named it a HighLight strain in November 2022, describing it as Runtz "with the wattage turned up."⁹ It’s held its ground ever since, ranking among the 25 most popular strains nationwide as recently as February 2026.¹⁰

The aroma skews slightly sweeter, with candy-forward notes of sweet citrus and cream over a softer gas backbone. It’s less gassy than Runtz OG and Pink Runtz, but it’s louder and the overall aroma presence is exceptional.

Berry Runtz is most commonly described as a direct Zkittlez x Gelato phenotype in line with the rest of the classic family, though some say it’s a cross of Kushberries and White Runtz developed by Maryland-based cultivator SunMed Labs. 

The aroma is known for being more berry-forward than the rest of its family. Layers of bright, jammy berries float over the family's signature gas foundation, with a sweetness that balances confection with fruit.

Sour Runtz Strain: Candy Gas Meets Dank Diesel

Sour Runtz is a cross of Sour Diesel and Runtz, and that Sour Diesel parentage is immediately apparent in the aroma. Where the rest of the family leans into candy sweetness with a gas undertone, Sour Runtz leads with fuel-forward diesel and bright tropical citrus, with the Runtz candy sweetness sitting underneath. It's the sharpest, most electric aroma here and it’s one of the clearest departures from the classic candy-gas template.

Abstrax's Sour RNTZ profile also marks the first terpene departure in the family, shifting from the shared d-Limonene, beta-Myrcene, and alpha-Pinene foundation to a dominant set of beta-Caryophyllene, d-Limonene, and Linalool. Floral Linalool might seem out of place in a diesel-forward gas profile, but Linalool-dominant strains possess a wide range of aromas including those present in dank strains like Sour Runtz. 

Blue Runtz Strain: Dark Berry, Deep Aroma, and Gentle Gas

Blue Runtz is most commonly attributed to a cross of Blueberry and White Runtz. Where classic Runtz phenotypes lean into sweet candy and gas, Blue Runtz goes darker and deeper. It’s the darkest fruit expression in the family with ripe blueberries and tart blackberries layered over earthy musk and the Runtz brightness sitting at the base. 

As a second-generation cross built on the Runtz foundation rather than directly from the Zkittlez x Gelato 33 lineage, Blue Runtz (along with Sour Runtz) represents a genuine aromatic evolution of the family. That generational difference shows up in the chemistry, and it's part of what makes both phenotypes interesting for formulators building beyond classic Runtz profiles.
